    DETECTING COPPER RESIDUES IN SEDIMENTS FROM AQUATIC COPPER-BASED PESTICIDE APPLICATIONS

    Copper-based algaecides and herbicides are commonly used to mitigate risks of problematic algae and weeds, however there are concerns regarding copper accumulation from treatments. Modeling and laboratory experiments can be used to predict copper accumulation and measurement in sediments, as well as benthic invertebrate responses following treatments. Modeling was used to estimate copper residual concentrations in sediments from algaecide and herbicide treatments. Reported and measured method detection limits (MDLs; minimum concentration of an analyte of interest that can be measured with 99 percent confidence in a specific matrix using an analytical method) were compared to model estimated copper residual concentrations in sediments to determine measurement of copper accumulation from treatments. Laboratory toxicity experiments were used to measure the bioavailability of copper in sediments. Comparisons of results from modeling and laboratory experiments to field measurements were used to determine the accuracy of site specific predictions. Site specific predictions of copper accumulation and responses of benthic invertebrates following treatments can be used to guide decisions regarding risk mitigation of algae and aquatic weeds with copper-based algaecides and herbicides

    Random bisexual forests: Intersections between gender, sexuality, and race in /s/ production

    The ideology of “the gay lisp” has inspired numerous quantitative studies examining the relationship between /s/ production and sexuality in American English (e.g. Linville 1998; Munson et al. 2006a; Zimman 2013). There are two key gaps in this literature. First, research in this area typically focuses on monosexual (i.e. lesbian, gay, and straight) speakers to the exclusion of bisexuality. Second, work in this area rarely considers the intersection of sexuality with factors outside of gender or sex, and to a lesser extent geographic location (e.g. Campbell-Kibler 2011; Podesva & Hofwegen 2014). This article addresses these disparities by (1) centralizing bisexual speakers and (2) attending to social factors such as race, place, age, and their intersections in the analysis. To that end, we build upon previous work by Willis (forthcoming) and apply a random forest (Breiman 2001) to /s/ center of gravity measurements. In doing so, we follow Tagliamonte and Baayen (2012) in demonstrating the utility of random forests as an approach to quantitative sociolinguistic analysis. Ultimately, the analysis underscores the need to attend to power structures and biases within research practice: the monosexist ideologies of sexuality and gender normativity that obfuscate bisexuality, and the privileging of whiteness that permeates quantitative studies of sexuality and the voice

    Effective PSHE education: values, purposes and future directions

    This article explores the perceived effectiveness of personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education in primary and secondary schools. It outlines the relationship between perceived effectiveness and a range of explanatory factors, linking these to the values and ethos of schools, differing views of the purposes of PSHE education, and long-standing policy agendas. We conclude by attempting to locate PSHE education in the new and rapidly evolving policy context and discuss some potential ways forward, as established means of support and challenge disappear. The data utilised in the paper come from a mapping and effectiveness study of PSHE education in both primary and secondary schools throughout England, which was conducted by Sheffield Hallam University on behalf of the Department for Education

    Improving the FAIRness of Australia’s grains research sector data

    Across Australia’s arable landscapes, thousands of crop trials have been conducted to improve the profitability and sustainability of Australian grain production. Although there have been significant steps to make knowledge gained from trials available to users, there is the potential to further support the development of next generation data models and knowledge products by integrating trials from disparatei sources by adhering to FAIR principles of data management. That is, making data: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. This research explores whether Online Farm Trials increase the FAIRness of agricultural grains trial datasets through a comparison of the trial data capture and handling practices of organisations whose datasets are not discoverable through Online Farm Trials (OFT) (N = 50) with the FAIRness of the datasets discoverable through OFT. The findings demonstrate that OFT is helping to make the results of Australia’s grains trials more FAIR to the users of trial data, and suggests a number of improvements to the FAIRness of trial datasets, foremost through the use of machine-readable metadata

    Fundamental Solutions in Plane Problem for Anisotropic Elastic Medium Under Moving Oscillating Source

    In present article we consider the problems of concentrated point force which is moving with constant velocity and oscillating with cyclic frequency in unbounded homogeneous anisotropic elastic two-dimensional medium. The properties of plane waves and their phase, slowness and ray or group velocity curves for 2D problem in moving coordinate system are described. By using the Fourier integral transform techniques and established the properties of the plane waves, the explicit representation of the elastodynamic Green's tensor is obtained for all types of source motion as a sum of the integrals over the finite interval. The dynamic components of the Green's tensor are extracted. The stationary phase method is applied to derive an asymptotic approximation of the far wave field. The simple formulae for Poynting energy flux vectors for moving and fixed observers are presented too. It is noted that in the far zones the cylindrical waves are separated under kinematics and energy. It is shown that the motion bring some differences in the far field properties.     LCOGT Network Observatory Operations

    We describe the operational capabilities of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network. We summarize our hardware and software for maintaining and monitoring network health. We focus on methodologies to utilize the automated system to monitor availability of sites, instruments and telescopes, to monitor performance, permit automatic recovery, and provide automatic error reporting. The same jTCS control system is used on telescopes of apertures 0.4m, 0.8m, 1m and 2m, and for multiple instruments on each. We describe our network operational model, including workloads, and illustrate our current tools, and operational performance indicators, including telemetry and metrics reporting from on-site reductions. The system was conceived and designed to establish effective, reliable autonomous operations, with automatic monitoring and recovery - minimizing human intervention while maintaining quality. We illustrate how far we have been able to achieve that.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figure
